What organization do you work for? What do they do?

I currently work for Coventry Healthcare in support of their Behavior Health department, MHNet Behavioral Health. Coventry Healthcare is a $14 billion Fortune 500 national managed health care company.  Our MHNet Behavioral Health division improves the well-being of our members through a quality, clinical outcome-oriented model. MHNet provides innovative Behavioral Health and EAP/Work-Life services for health plans, employer groups and public programs.

 What is your role in that organization?

I am a Human Resource Generalist, responsible for soup to nuts human resource process. Recruitment, Employee Relations, HRIS, On-boarding, workforce planning, Training and Development, you name it I do it or I am involved some how.

How did you get to that role? Jobs that led to your current role?

Through hard work, perseverance and dedication to continuous learning. Being a Human Resource professional is actually my second career.  A year after high school, with no way to pay for college, I made the decision to join the United States Air Force.  I spent 12 years in the Air Force as a Security Specialist.  The last year and a half of my service I spent working for my commander performing personnel work. I believe this is where my love for the human resource career field became evident. In 1996 I separated from the Air Force, entered school to complete my Bachelors of Management degree while working in retail management.  With my Bachelors degree completed I quickly realized that being in retail management was not for me.  I decided to continue my education by getting my MBA in Business Administration. In 1998 I entered the world of Human Resources when I was hired by Hewitt Associates (now Aon Hewitt) as a customer service agent, answering questions to employees of Fortune 500 companies regarding the benefits.

Have you had any leadership roles within ASTD

I am currently the Director of On-Boarding for CFCASTD.

What do you like most about your job?

I love to give people a job.  There has been nothing more exciting then hearing the joy in someone’s voice when I tell them we have selected them to fill a role in our organization. You can hear the weight be lifted from their shoulder when they realize they can now feed their family or pay their bills. 

What do you like least about your job?

Having to terminate an employee. We always try and give people as many opportunities to meet performance or correct their attendance issues but sometimes thing just don’t work out. 

What is your average day like?

I love the variety of work that I perform, there is no such thing as a typical day in my world.

If you had hiring power, what skills would you look for in a new hire?

Analytical skills, innovation ability and personality to fit the role we are trying to fill.

What is some of the best advice you ever received from a mentor?

To treat other how you want to be treated. This comes into play in every aspect when is come to Human Resources; hiring, on-boarding, development and termination.

What advice do you wish you had received?

How to better handle conflict, especially when it comes to those who are my superiors.

What industry advancements do you see as having a large impact on how you perform your role?

Healthcare reform, technology advancements and government regulations

If you could attend one industry event this year (time and money are no issue), which do you think would be most valuable to you?

ASTD International Conference and Expo (ICE)

What education/degree/certifications do you currently hold?

I have earned my Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Management and my MBA in Business Administration with theUniversityofPhoenix. Yes, I am aPhoenix!

I also have a Professional Human Resource (PHR) certificate.

What education/degree/certifications do you plan to go after?

Next year I would like to receive my Senior Professional Human Resource (SPHR) certificate.

For your role, what is your favorite or most used tool?

My favorite tool to use is Adobe Captive to create on-line training for my employees. My organization has just started to learn of the possibilities and creativity that be infused in our training program

What, within the Education and Training industry, would you like to get more exposure?

Developing training from a simple idea into viable training for my employees.

Who was most influential in your career and why?

A former supervisorm by the name of Colleen Davis. As her subordinate she was always so supportive of my career expirations. Also she has such a superior ability to communicate to others no matter what the news may be.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Spend time with my family, I love to travel, watch sports, and photography

Have you considered being a mentor or a mentee? What are you personally looking for from that experience?

In 2010 I was a mentee and had such a great experience. I learned so much from everyone but would like to especially thank Anita Torres for everything she has shared with me regarding the Training and Development career field.
