CPLP: Preparing for the Knowledge Exam. You’ve got questions

We’ve got answers.

The first question on everyone’s mind is usually simple,

“Where do I start?”

Let’s start at the very beginning.

It’s a very good place to start.

When you read you begin with A-B-C

When you study for the CPLP Knowledge Exam, you begin with the ASTD Learning System.

While there are some great resources to assist with your study, the 10-volume ASTD Learning System is an absolute must for  Knowledge Exam preparation.

How much time should I expect to spend studying?

Among our CFC ASTD CPLP’s, three months was the most common time frame for studying with the ASTD Learning System.

It is a serious time commitment. And, I can tell you from personal experience, studying through the 10 volumes is a tough slog. Most of our Chapter CPLPs had similar comments. So buy a fresh package of highlighters in your favorite color. Get a new pen for marginal notes. And schedule the time to get through the system. But don’t spend time or money on study aids yet. You’ll need those for your final prep as Exam Day approaches.

What’s actually in the Learning System?

The Learning System contains the models and knowledge base for the nine Areas of Expertise (AOE’s). CPLPs are expected to have a working, functional knowledge in each of these. You will find that you know much of the information. You will also find that you have different terms for similar things. That you take a different path to get to the same places. But it is critical to remember that passing the Knowledge Exam requires being able to give the ‘ASTD’ answers. And those are in the ASTD Learning System.

Before you start, make sure you download all the updates and review the ASTD Learning System Home Page to make sure you have the most current updates.

One last note. Give yourself time to finish studying at least two weeks prior to the exam. Four is better. You’ll use those last few weeks to focus in on specific content areas and take practice exams. That’s when those Study Aids will come in.

Is it really worth the time commitment?

Actually, you are the only one who can answer that question. Do you see value in CPLP certification? Do you want to establish yourself as Professional in Learning and Development? If you do, then it is well worth the time.

Once I’ve studied the ASTD Learning System, how do I know if I’m ready for the Knowledge Exam?

That’s our next post.
